EMBO Practical Course & 10th Anniversary of Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM)
About the Practical Course
Light sheet microscopy is an emerging technology that enables imaging of large biological specimens with minimal photodamage. It opens new avenues to study cell biological and developmental processes with unprecedented imaging speed and facilitates systems biology approaches by quantitative imaging of entire living systems. Light sheet microscopy has only recently left the optical tables of technology developers and become more broadly available through commercial and open access platforms. This EMBO practical course will comprehensively introduce the light sheet microscopy paradigm to the new generation of scientists.
The course will be immediately followed by a 10th anniversary light sheet fluorescence microscopy conference held at MPI-CBG in Dresden between 12-15 August 2018.
Light sheets opened entirely new windows into the inner workings of cells and organisms and re-invigorated several research fields including developmental and cell biology, physiology, neurobiology and biodiversity research. This conference marks the 10th Anniversary of Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM) meetings that started in 2009 in Dresden. It will bring together the technology developers and users of light sheets, showcase the latest light sheet set-ups and how to best deploy them for the benefit of the biological research community.
Every two years, the Microspectroscopy Research Facility Wageningen of Wageningen University & Research and Microscopic Imaging Centre of Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences organise a microspectroscopy course for young scientists and PhD students. This course is organised in collaboration with Dr. Y. Stahl and Dr. S. Weidtkamp-Peters from Centre for Advanced Imaging of Heinrich Heine University in Germany.
This course is about several microscopic and spectroscopic techniques for studying biological processes in living cells. Microspectroscopic applications are the methods of choice because direct information on molecular interactions and dynamic events involving biomolecules is obtained with minimal perturbation of cellular integrity and function.
Fish and amphibian embryo models are highly popular in the area of toxicology, both in research, industry and potential regulatory application. These models exhibit a number of advantages which make them superior and/or complementary to others. In compliance with international animal welfare regulations, the fish and amphibian embryo models provide an ethically acceptable small scale analysis system with the complexity of a complete organism. A suite of available advanced methodologies allows various types of experimental approaches ranging from phenotypic observations, functional assays to “omics” analysis. The ultimate goal of the symposium is to promote the development of the fish and frog embryo models as potential alternatives to animal testing.
Four exciting symposia were held between 2010 and 2016 with a strong focus on the zebrafish model. The symposium aims to bring together scientists using fish and frog embryo models, exchange knowledge, ideas and latest developments in the field of toxicology and teratology. Invited lectures will focus on specific topics. Breakout sessions will allow to identify major advantages, limitations, new fields and future research needs of the fish/amphibian embryo model and to establish collaborations.
Three breakout sessions are at present planned (session 1 will kindly be supported and organised by Joop de Knecht and Leo van der Ven, RIVM)
1. Combining toxicokinetics, biotransformation and AOP development in zebrafish embryos for development of predictive assays
2. Testing for neuroactivity/-toxicity
3. Prediction of developmental toxicity/integrating testing strategies
There might be slight changes in the topics of the breakout sessions depending on the interest of the participants and their contributions.
International Zebrafish Conference
ACQUIFER, a division of DITABIS AG, is participating the International Zebrafish Conference in Madison, USA! The event starts on 21st June and ends on 24th June 2018.
The 13th International Zebrafish Conference (IZFC – renamed from “International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics” to reflect the broadening scope of zebrafish research work) returns to Madison, Wisconsin June 20-24, 2018. The IZFC will include numerous opportunities to share results from the latest zebrafish research and inform participants about the newest advances and cutting-edge zebrafish research tools and technologies.
The conference will include numerous organized and informal educational and networking opportunities for trainees and junior investigators, as well as established investigators. The meeting is being held in the newly renovated Wisconsin Union and includes a number of organized social events such as a a reception, a barbecue picnic, a lunchtime community meeting, and a final formal banquet immediately followed by an after-party with an award-winning live band and dancing.
Forge collaborations, coordinate community resources, and foster the exposure and success of junior zebrafish investigators and trainees. We look forward to seeing you there!
4th Strategic Meeting for Medaka Research & Regional Fish Meeting
Medaka has been recognized as an ideal model system for biology and biomedical science. Medaka is, compared to other fish models, used in a wide variety of subjects, from basic biology to applied science. Because of this there are few opportunities for medaka researchers in the different fields to meet and get to know each other. In addition, the number of researchers using medaka has been growing rapidly during the last decade. This international strategic meeting for medaka research aimed at promoting networking among medaka researchers worldwide. Posters and oral talks from the representative PIs will be presented.

By doing the “International Conference on Nephrology and Therapeutics” we intend to divulge the state of art in renal tract development research. This will include presentations of the most up to date and pioneering research. We hope to create an exiting environment of scientific exchanging and discussion including high profile scientists, nephrologists and students. Ultimately, with this conference we expect to give a step forward to better understand and find new therapies of renal tract diseases.

2nd International FishMed Conference on Zebrafish Research
The FishMed2018 is the third of a series of meetings organized by IIMCB that aims to share the most recent knowledge and developments in zebrafish research. The scientific presentations will cover the following topics: organs development and regeneration, neurobiology, genes regulation and disease models. The lectures were also related to technologies, including drug screening, sequencing, imaging and zebrafish husbandry system.
The 2nd International FishMed Conference on Zebrafish Research will be held at Conference Centre of the Nałęcz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering PAN.

Focus on Microscopy 2018 is the continuation of a yearly conference series presenting the latest innovations in optical microscopy and their application in biology, medicine and the material sciences. Key subjects for the conference series are the theory and practice of 3D optical imaging, related 3D image processing, and reporting especially on developments in resolution and imaging modalities. The conference series covers also the rapidly advancing fluorescence labeling techniques for confocal and multi-photon 3D imaging of -live- biological specimens.
